Polarization maintaining fluoride glass optical fibers and couplers for infrared applications

Abstract

Polarization maintaining optical fibers have been developed for use in silica glass based systems over the last several years. Based on birefringence induced by noncircular cores, these fibers have found application in interferometry and integrated optics. Until now, one limit on their performance has been the losses in silica fibers at wave lengths above the attenuation minimum near 1.55 μm. To address the interest in fiberoptic interferometric techniques for the infrared, Le Verre Fluoré has developed polarization-maintaining single mode optical fibers using fluoride glasses, with a wavelength range of operation extending to 2.5 μm.
