Self-trapping and compensation of the polarization mode dispersion by means of the Kerr effect for nonsoliton signals

Abstract

In soliton systems the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) can be compensated by means of the soliton trapping effect due to the fact that orthogonally polarized solitons can trap one another in the time domain shifting their frequency through the cross phase modulation [1-2], In this work we demonstrate that the trapping effect can show up also for conventional intensity modulated (IM) signals producing a compensation of the degradation induced by the PMD. The signal evolution was obtained by solving the coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations by means of the split-step method. The results are shown for a 5 Gbit/s NRZ IM-DD system transmitting over 5000 km with a fiber group velocity dispersion (GVD) equal to β2 = -1 ps2/km.
