Abstract
Until now, only a few tunable ultraviolet laser crystals have been reported. All of them are based on the 4f–5d transition of Ce3+ ions in fluoride crystals: YLiF4, 1LaF3,2LiCaAlF6,3 and LuLiF4.4 In spite of their potentiality as new categories of laser media, there has been little work on these crystals. Their broad gain-width in the ultraviolet region is attractive for amplifying ultrashort pulses as excimer lasers.5 In this presentation, we will describe the properties of Ce3+:LuLiF4 as a tunable amplifier, and demonstrate high-gain amplification using this material.
