Abstract

In future telecommunication networks, the growing information throughput will require dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) switching nodes. For such nodes optical switching will be extremely important in order to avoid the predicted electronic bottleneck, and wavelength, time, and space switching are all being currently investigated. A unified technical approach is very desirable to address these different switching functions with a reasonable development effort. The InP-based semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) possesses the multi-functionality necessary for the realization of different optical switching arrangements.1
