Abstract
We have optimized a semiconductor saturable absorber mode locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL)1 to deliver 5.5 ps pulses with energies as high as 2.3 nJ. To our knowledge, this is the highest energy directly obtained from an EDFL.2 To obtain the high powers, we intentionally add a lossy fiber next to the saturable absorber. In addition, we characterize the laser performance using a series of bulk and multiple quantum-well (MQW) semiconductor saturable absorbers. In particular, we find that both bulk and MQW absorbers cause successful mode locking of the EDFL. The bandgap and optical absorbance, however, determine the pulse width for a particular saturable absorber.
