Abstract

We describe the first experimental demonstration of a novel monolithic optical switch based on the integration of GaAs/AlGaAs vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and heterojunction phototransistors (HPTs), which can be dynamically reconfigured to perform both optical logic and spatial routing functions, thus providing the technology base for potentially more flexible optical logic architectures.
