Abstract

Future linear collider and short wavelength Free Electron Lasers require very bright electron beams. The advent of microwave gun and photoinjector concepts shows the way towards the production of such bright beams. Since the beginning of 1990 the Laboratoire de l’Accéiérateur Linéaire, well involved in the field of high gradient accelerating structures and photocathodes, and the Institut d’Optique, which is known in the field of ultrashort laser development, are constructing an experimental photoinjector named CANDELA (Canon Declenché par Laser).
