Abstract
Advances in lightwave technology, video compression, and digital signal processing are the key enablers for rebuilding the nation's distribution network for delivery of a wide range of advanced video and interactive services. This paper will review the impact of video compression and VLSI digital signal processing on the designs currently being considered for distribution networks. The video delivery options to be discussed include asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) with a video-overlay, hybrid fiber-coax, direct broadcast satellite and 28 GHz.
