Abstract
Linear attenuation of high power CO2 laser pulses using a binary gas mixture has allowed saturation-free operation upto an intensity of 1 MW/cm2.1 However, saturation at higher intensities and the restricted range of linear attenuation (0—30 dB in a 10 cm absorption length) limited the versatility of this attenuator. We report, in this paper, a novel attenuation technique that allows significant (five orders of magnitude) enhancement in the dynamic range, as well as the elimination of intensity-dependent saturation.
