Single-frequency Q-switched MISEE using an evanescent-wave coupled nonlinear semiconductor mirror

Abstract

We have passively Q-switched an otherwise cw monolithic Nd:YAG laser by adding a nonlinear semiconductor mirror to a total internal reflection point of the laser cavity. Single-frequency, 0.7 MJ. sub-100 ns pulses at ≈ 1 MHz repetition rate were demonstrated. Rigidly attaching the nonlinear mirror with fixed spacers offers the possibility to form a compact, monolithic laser, which fulfills the stringent requirements for industrial applications, such as being compact, simple and reliable. This is the first time that Q - switching of a cw-pumped MISER has been shown. In addition, we extend the basic principle of an A-FPSA, by controlling the coupling through frustrated total internal reflection instead of a dielectric top mirror.
