Abstract

We report the demonstration of quasi-phasematehed (QPM) optical parametric amplification and QPM optical parametric oscillation, both in a periodically poled LiNbO3 waveguide. Previous birefringently phasematching waveguide optical parametric oscillators (OPO's)1 suffered from elevated operating temperatures and low gain due to the use of the d31 nonlinear coefficient. Single pass QPM second harmonic generation in LiNbO3 waveguides has been shown to be an efficient technique for the generation of blue light from near-IR laser diodes, hi this work we utilize quasi-phasematching to overcome the limitations inherent to birefringent phasematching in waveguide OPO’s, allowing room temperature operation, use of the larger d33 nonlinear coefficient, and greatly increased parametric gain.
