Abstract
High power coherent vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have a unique ability to generate optical field with complicated 2-D phase front. Two types have been realized: the extension of the conventional edge-emitting 1-D linear array to 2-D phase-coupled VCSELs1,2 and the newly developed zone lasers (Z-lasers).3 Two-dimensional VCSEL arrays in general generate 4 lobes in the farfield whereas the Z-lasers focus part of their output into a single spot at a predetermined distance away from the laser.
