Abstract

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) diodes emitting in the visible portion of the spectrum hold promise for a variety of applications including scanning, printing, plastic fiber-based optical communications, and display. Since the first demonstration of photo-pumped lasing at ~660 nm in an unintentionally doped AlGaInP/AlGaAs visible VCSEL structure in 1992,1 rapid progress has been made toward the demonstration of efficient electrically injected devices.
