Abstract

The development of rare-earth-doped fiber amplifiers has progressed rapidly, being driven technologically by the development of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) serving the third telecommunications window at 1.55 μm. Many of the fiber amplifier characteristics, optimized for telecommunication needs, are also useful in measurement technology. This paper presents many examples of these applications. In this summary, two examples of fiber amplifier applications are discussed.
