Write-once optical recording media composed of nanometer-size copper particles

Abstract

Write-once (WO) optical disks with large change of reflectance are attractive recording media for digital audio disks and video disks. Many WO media have been investigated, including organic dye and tellurium based alloy, etc. In this paper we describe new WO media consisting of copper (Cu) island films.1,2 The Cu island films are composed of nanometer-size copper particles (i.e., islands) and exhibit a high reflectance and large absorptance at the wavelength of 0.8 μm caused by the resonance of free electrons in the copper islands. Therefore it is expected that an efficient head-mode write-once optical memory for commercially available 800-nm laser diodes can be realized by using them. Laser writing of submicron ‘pits’ patterns on the Cu island films is demonstrated.
