Abstract
An electron-beam sustained discharge atomic xenon laser1 operates on five eye-safe near-infrared transitions between the 5d → 6p manifolds. Electron beam excitation indirectly populates the 5d manifold from tire ground state via higher lying excited states. After lasing the xenon atoms end up in the 6s metastable state from which they are ionized again by the discharge electrons.
