Abstract

The chromatic dispersion in optical fibers puts a fundamental limit to the bitrate × distance product in high-speed optical communication systems. An easy and accurate method for measuring the dispersion is therefore an important tool for characterization of optical fibers. We present a new highly accurate measurement technique, which determines the dispersion from the frequency response function of the fiber measured with a standard lightwave component analyzer.
