Abstract
To reduce dispersion penalties, it is important to use low-chirp sources in long-haul optical fiber transmission systems, especially when Er-doped fiber amplifiers are used to overcome the limitations imposed by fiber toss, Electroabsorptive modulators can be used to encode data in conventional non-return to zero (NRZ) or soli ton-based transmission systems.1 Because of their nonlinear trans- mission-vs-voltage (T-V) properties, these devices can also be used as soliton generators.1 Previous techniques for measuring chirp in these devices are based on a "small signal" assumption that the T-V function is linear.2,3
