Electron beam pumped KrF amplifiers for the Nike laser system

Abstract

The Nike laser system1 is designed to deliver 3 kJ to a target in a highly uniform focal profile similar to profiles required for direct drive laser fusion. The last two amplifier stages of Nike are electron beam pumped. The system is integrated through the first electron beam pumped amplifier, a 20 × 20 cm2 square gain aperture (the "20 cm amplifier"). The 20 cm amplifier takes 1-2 joules of output from an array of large aperture discharge amplifiers and increases the energy to 150-200 joules. When completed, a 60 × 60 cm2 final amplifier stage will increase this output to 5 kJ.
