Abstract

The second order optical susceptibility of single crystal thin films of an organic material, 2-cyclooctylamino-5-nitropyridine (COANP), has been measured by second harmonic generation. This material has an orthorhombic crystal structure with point group mm2. The surfaces of the films have [100] orientation (a-axis perpendicular). The films were approximately 1 cm2 in area and 4 μm in thickness and were prepared by the "shear method" on quartz and oxide-coated silicon substrates. The thickness of the films can be controlled between about 2 to 10 pm. This material (COANP) does not absorb significantly between about 470 and 1500 μm.
