High brightness output from a laser diode array coupled to a self-pumped phase conjugator

Abstract

Laser diode arrays can now generate many watts of raw optical power, but the spatial quality of the output beam is poor. The beam divergence of a typical laser diode array is more than 40 times greater than the diffraction-limit. Here we describe how a phase- conjugate external cavity can make a laser diode array emit a near diffraction limited, single lobe output beam.
