Abstract

Long-haul, optically amplified submarine systems currently under development using .NRZ data formats are likely to use 1480 nm-pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) since pump diodes at this wavelength have proven reliability. However, by the time soliton-based systems may be ready for deployment, the reliability of 980 nm pumps may have become sufficiently established for submarine applications. For this reason, we have conducted a detailed experimental comparison between 980 nm and 1480 nm-pumped EDFAs operating under conditions relevant to two possible future soliton systems.
