Abstract
Recently, UV solid state laser technology has been success fully developed asan alternative to the excimer laser for corneal refractive surgery. It has bear demonstrated that 213 nm, generated by a frequency-quintupling neodymium-YAG (Nd:YAG) laser, is capable of ablating comeal tissue with a comparable degree of precision and tissue damage as the 193 nm. ArF excimer laser.1 The UV solid state laser offers a new possibility for comeal reshaping using a flying-spot (scanning) approach that may facilitate not only spherical correction (myopia or hyperopia) but also aspheric comeal sculpting.
