Coherent coupling of nonresonant waveguide-laser arrays by synchronization of super modes from locally composed mode clusters

Abstract

The individual elements of nonmonolithic waveguide laser arrays being several millimeters wide have generally non identical optical length. The offset of the resonant frequencies is of statistical nature and may extend beyond the locking range. The coherent coupling of such arrays is unsolved up to now. We propose a coupling scheme, where we use the following strategy. (1) Super modes with optimized brightness are synthesized by Laterally coupling of neighboring laser elements (Ne). The coupling method should allow a lot of super modes to exist over the coupling range with a wide frequency spectrum. This group of modes is defined as a mode cluster. (2) A second coupling process composes a single super mode over the whole array (made up of N elements) by synchronization and selection of one super mode from each mode cluster.
