Abstract

A promising alternative for eyesafe Ho lasers (λ = 2.1 μm) is the radiation in the 1.42-1.45 μm range because of the water extinction co- efficient. This radiation can be obtained in a four-level system on the 4F3/2-4I13/2 transition of Nd3+ ions in different crystal hosts. Nowadays only one type of eyesafe Nd laser is known; that is the flashpumped Nd:YAG laser, oscillating at 1.444-μm wavelength with a total efficiency η = 0.5%.1 In this paper we report more efficient (η > 1%) eyesafe operation of a chromium, cerium, and neodymium-doped gadolinium gallium garnet (Cr,Ce,Nd:GGG) crystal laser at l.423-μm wavelength. Spectroscopic data for the 4F3/2- 4I13/2 transition of Nd3+ ions in GGG and YAG crystals near 1.4 μm are also presented.
