Abstract
We previously published results on ultrafast, high throughput, all-optical switching with half beat length nonlinear directional couplers (NLDC) made of AlGaAs, used at photon energies below half the band gap.1-3 However, they were hampered by multi-photon absorption (MPA), primarily three photon absorption (3PA). It has been shown theoretically that the effect of 3PA (and the switching energy) can be reduced by using longer waveguides,4 Here we present results on such optimized couplers, as well as one beat length coupler which have not been reported previously. The waveguide geometry used is similar to the ones described in Refs. 1-3, but with device lengths increased three-fold. By varying the interchannel spacing, devices exactly one half and one beat length long were fabricated.
