Abstract

We have observed that stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in some optical fibers makes them act as beam cleanup devices. When an input beam was launched at an angle, or a highly divergent beam launched into the entire numerical aperture (~200 modes) of the fibers, backward SBS was observed coming only from the HE11 mode. SBS is Known to exhibit interesting phenomena1,2 in single mode fibers (V < 2.4).
