700 Kilowatt Diode Pumping System

Abstract

It is well known that for equal pump pulse durations and stored energy densities, near-infrared laser diode pumps deposit less heat in Nd laser materials than typical white-light flashlamp pumping. Thus diode pumping is capable of increasing the average power available from Nd lasers that had been limited in average power by thermal rupture of the laser material. McDonnell Douglas and Hampshire Instruments have been investigating the use of high power diode arrays to improve the performance of the Nd:glass slab lasers used in Hampshire’s laser-generated X-ray lithography steppers. We herein describe the diode pumping system and its use in pumping a large Nd:glass laser slab.
