Abstract

The introduction of compact lasers for generating subpicosecond duration and nanojoule energy pulses will facilitate further rapid advances in many research areas of ultrafast-phenomena So far, however, output pulse energies from semiconductor and optical fiber-based femtosecond, mode-locked systems ai e at best reaching about one hundred picojoules.1-3 This is more than one order of magnitude less than that from dye and Ti:sapphire lasers. We report the highest energy (2 nJ) subpicosecond optical pulses that, to our knowledge, have been generated by a semiconductor laser and fiber-based system.
