Abstract

Nd:BaY2F8 is a laser material1 that is promising as a diode-pumped material. It has an effective emission cross section for the primary laser transition (~1.5 × 10−19 cm2) comparable to that of YLF (Fig. 1) while also possessing a long upper-state lifetime (~460 μs). In addition, it is a monoclinic crystal, which makes it naturally biaxial. Its index of refraction (averaged over the three axes) is comparable to that of YLF2 (~1.51 vs. 1.45).
