Abstract
Recently Mullen et al.1 reported externally SPBS (stimulated photorefractive backscattering) in 0°-cut cobalt-doped BaTiO3 (barium titanate) with reflectivities as high as ~60%. We report, for the first time, externally SPBS in KNbO3 (potassium niobate). In addition, we have improved the geometrical requirements for efficient FSPS (forward stimulated photorefractive scattering) by using a 45° crystallographic cut with the light polarization in the b-c plane. Measurements of iron- doped KNbO3 show reflectivities as high as 50% and stable temporal operation.
