Abstract
In the last few years, the literature on QW lasers has increased enormously. Perhaps the most important development to come out of all this work is the realization that QW lasers with built-in strain can have performance characteristics, including reliability, which arc substantially superior to unstrained devices. This improved reliability finding was quite unexpected since the experience of the seventies and early eighties taught that "strained" lasers were doomed to an early death. Also unexpected was the realization that phenomena such as Auger recombination and intervalence band absorption, once thought to be fundamental in limiting the performance of longer wavelength diode lasers, can be virtually eliminated, using built-in strain.
