Frequency stabilization of AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs lasers at the kilohertz level

Abstract

Al1Ga1-xAs/GaAs laser diodes are compact sources of coherent radiation in the near-IR portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. They have been utilized1 for light-wave communication systems, optical atom traps, and optically pumped atomic frequency standards. Each of these applications benefits from a reduction in the laser's spectral width and stabilization of its center frequency. Line-width reduction is readily achieved through one of a variety of optical feedback techniques. Strong optical feedback (≈ 10%) from a diffraction grating2 has been used to reduce the laser linewjdth as well as provide control over its center frequency.
