Abstract

Ring diode lasers represent an important new class of lasers of potential importance for a number of applications including compact single-frequency sources for photonic integrated circuits. Although operation of several ring configurations has been reported,1,2 not much is known about the operating modes or the mode selection process occuring in these complex devices. In this paper, we present what we believe to be the first ring laser model detailed enough to investigate both the gain competition between two counterpropagating modes as well as their interaction with the Y-guide output coupler.
