Abstract

In this paper we report what we believe to be the first demonstration of cw mode- locked operation of wavelength tunable Cr3+ doped LiSrAlF6 (Cr:LiSAF), LiSr0.8Ca0.2AlF6(Cr:LiSCAF) and LiCaAlF6 (Cr:LiCAF) lasers pumped by a cw krypton laser. By incorporating an acoustooptic (AO) mode-locker and using an intracavity two-prism sequence for dispersion compensation, pulses of 150-fs duration were directly produced from both lasers. The low threshold characteristics of these lasers make Cr-doped LiSAF, LiSCAF, and LiCAF crystals promising solid-state laser materials in achieving compact diode-pumped mode-locked wavelength tunable laser systems.
