Abstract

A parallel fiber-optic interface for optical interconnection in computer or switching systems, such as shelf to shelf or board to board, offers numerous advantages1 over the standard parallel electrical interface as well as over a single-fiber serial interface. While such, interfaces are now being developed using arrays of LEDs (light-emitting diodes), the use of laser arrays have the added advantages of higher speed and fanout capability and lower crosstalk. Vertical-cavity laser diodes, while retaining most of the virtues of edge-emitting lasers, have the topology of leds particularly in terms of surface normal light output in a circular mode and dense two-dimensional (2-D) array capability. In this paper, we demonstrate a prototype thirty-six-channel parallel optical data link using monolithic 2 X 18 arrays of fiber-pigtailed GaAs vertical- cavity lasers and p-i-n photodetectors.
