Abstract
Neodymium doped yttrium orthosilicate (Y2SiO5) is a new laser material finding use in a variety of high power solid- state lasers.1,2 Its wide absorption line at 810 nm and its excellent energy storage properties give it an advantage over Nd:YAG for diode pumping.3 Because of its natural birefringence, losses due to thermally induced stress birefringence are negligible, compared with those in YAG. To aid the design of efficient, reliable Nd:YOS lasers we have recently completed a study of the relevant thermal and mechanical properties of this crystal.
