Abstract
Slow-wave electrodes capable of matching the velocity, and therefore the effective refractive index, of a microwave to that of an optical wave are essential for achieving wide bandwidth and low modulating power in traveling-wave electro-optic modulators fabricated using compound semiconductors such as GaAs and InP.1-3 Slow-wave electrodes employing narrow capacitive loading fins have been proposed and demonstrated.4 Here the original structures are modified by the inclusion of pads on the capacitive loading fins. These modifications allow greater flexibility in the design of the electrodes.
