Crack formation mechanism of bond materials in laser dressing of CBN grinding wheels

Abstract

CBN grinding wheels are used to grind hard materials and quenched steels. Diamond wheels are used also for grinding hard materials but are not suitable to grind iron-based metals; the diamond reacts with iron and ferrous carbide is generated. Therefore, CBN grains whose hardness comes after that of diamond grains, are used for grinding iron-based hard materials. However, dressing and trueing of CBN grinding wheels are very difficult because of the hardness, and dressers used for dressing of the wheels wear very rapidly. Therefore, the use of a laser beam is investigated to grind iron- based hard materials effectively without wear of the dressers. The advantages of laser dressing are to dress the wheels without tool wear, simultaneously with grinding. However, many kinds of damage are generated on a laser-machined surface, because the laser machining is thermal.
