Propagation of frequency-swept laser pulses in atomic vapor

Abstract

In atomic laser isotope separation processes, an adiabatic population inversion scheme using frequency swept lasers was proposed recently to achieve highly efficient excitation of atoms with hyperfine structure.1,2 Efficient excitation has been demonstrated in studies of coherent atomic excitation dynamics.1,2 However, in a large scale process, we must consider the nonlinear propagation effects of laser beams, which may alter the initial laser pulse, resulting in degradation of excitation efficiency. We earlier reported3 the propagation characteristics of unchirped laser pulses; now we present the propagation of frequency swept lasers in atomic vapor.
