Chirped pulse amplification in a Cr:LiSAF regenerative amplifier

Abstract

Recently, high laser intensities have been generated in AL2O3:Ti3+ using chirped puise amplification (CPA) in systems incorporating regenerative and single-pass amplifiers,1 However, since A12O3:Ti3- has a short fluorescence lifetime, (~3.2 µs), these systems suffer the costly disadvantage of requiring an auxiliary laser system for optical pumping. We report the development of a 100-fs pulse CPA regenerative amplifier employing conventional flashlamp pumping of a new laser material, LiSrAlF6:Cr3+. This development provides a convenient source of tunable high-intensity femtosecond laser pulses in the near IR, and offers a straightforward approach to the generation of ultraintense laser pulses. A regenerative amplifier of the type described can be incorporated in a table top system capable of peak powers >10 TW.
