Abstract

The NIKE laser system is designed with two large aperture E-beam KrF amplifiers to deliver 5 kJ of energy in a 4-5 ns pulse via angular multiplexing. The smaller of the two amplifiers has a 20-cm aperture and is operational. Tests of reliability, energy deposition, and extraction are currently in progress. The laser has been configured both as an amplifier and an oscillator. Several anomalies have been detected requiring further study.
