Abstract

Broadband, high-energy-storage, solid-state amplifiers and chirped-pulse amplification1 (CPA) further extend the peak power obtainable from a laser source. Laser generation of x rays and strong-field experiments require focusable beams at terawatt-power levels. We have constructed such a system at 802 nm, using Ti:sapphire amplifiers, and the CPA technique. Starting with sub-100-fs pulses from a synchronously pumped dye laser, we chirp the pulses with a positively dispersive, grating pair expander,2,3 stretching the pulsewidth to 180 ps, while preserving the femtosecond bandwidth.
