Mode-coupling measurements in semiconductor laser diodes

Abstract

Mode coupling, or the dependence of the gain tor the ith mode on the photon density of the jth mode, has been used to explain damping of the modulation response of laser diodes.1 Using a new experimental technique, we have measured the spectrum of this coupling in GaAs/AlGaAs lasers and found it to be asymmetric. This asymmetry was previously observed in quaternary lasers,2 indicating that this phenomenon may be material independent.
