Abstract
Liposomes are membrane model systems that simulate vesicles, organelles, and cells. The focus of our research has been to understand how laser energy in the form of high-power pulses is absorbed and then converted into release of dye molecules encapsulated or bound in the membrane bilayer of liposomes. The fundamental molecular processes involve energy transfer from both electronic and vibrational states. An understanding of the mechanics of release of liposomal contents can be applied to the assessment of laser-induced damage to cells and the delivery of drugs for the treatment of malignant tumors.
