Abstract
Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA)1–3 have recently come to the forefront of lightwave technology. 4 They now seem to be key components, likely to play a major role in future 1.5 μm optical fiber communication systems. Pumped with high-power laser diodes, EDFAs offer a practical and bit-rate-independent means for boosting high-speed signals transmitted in different optical channels without the need for electronic regeneration, unlike in conventional systems.
