The mode-locked dye laser; a gyro without dead band?

Abstract

A femtosecond ring dye laser emits two trains of pulses of typically 1013-Hz bandwidth each, corresponding to the two sets of phase-locked modes circulating in opposite directions in the cavity. As with a cw laser gyro, the two outputs can be made to beat with each other on a detector, provided appropriate delays are used to ensure temporal overlap of the two ultrashort pulses.
