Abstract
The advent of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) gives rise to a significant increase in the nonregenerative fiber-optic transmission length in recent experiments.1,2 One of the major benefits of using EDFAs in the long-distance system is their facilitation of both high-speed transmission and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), eventually with the same system architecture. This feature is expected to contribute greatly to keeping pace with the growing telecommunication traffic demand. We will explore the capability of very large-capacity long-distance transmission by using EDFAs.
