Abstract

Development of a technique for measuring the auto-correlation coefficients of the temporal and spatial fluctuations in a gas flow field has been carried out.1 These studies were directed at the temporal concentration fluctuations of CO2 from a 4.77-mm-diameter, ASME flat-velocity-profile nozzle for various flow rates up to Re = 22,000 using pure rotational Raman scattering. In this paper, we present the results of both spatial and temporal correlation measurements on this jet using Rayleigh as well as Raman scattering. The goals of this effort are: 1) to provide critical assessments of the requirements on the spatial size and temporal duration of optical measurements in gas flow fields, and 2) to obtain data that will generate additional insight into gas mixing processes.
