Grating competition in photorefractive crystals

Abstract

When three incident mutually coherent beams interact by degenerate four wave mixing in a photorefractive medium, four gratings are induced:1 (1) a transmission grating, (2) a reflection grating, (3) a grating from the pumps, and (4) a grating from the probe and phase conjugate beams. When the photorefractive diffraction efficiency is low, as is common in sillenite and semiconductor crystals, the diffraction from the two back reflection gratings (of the pump beams and the probe and phase conjugate beams) contributes insignificantly to the phase conjugate. In this case, the phase conjugate beam has two contributions: one from the reflection hologram, which has a relatively slow response time, and one from the transmission hologram, which has a fast response time.2
